Signs Your Battery is Failing
How do you know if your car battery is going bad? The most common warning signs are a slow or sluggish engine crank, dim headlights, a battery warning light on the dashboard, corrosion on the terminals, and a battery that is more than three to five years old. If you notice any of these, have your battery tested before it leaves you stranded.
Slow or sluggish crank. If your engine turns over more slowly than usual, or you hear a clicking sound when you turn the key or press the start button, the battery may not be delivering enough power.
Dim lights or electrical glitches. Headlights that look weaker than normal, interior lights that flicker, or a radio and infotainment screen that reset on their own can all point to a weak battery.
Battery or charging warning light. A battery icon on your dashboard means the charging system needs attention. It can point to the battery itself, but also to the alternator or a connection, so it's worth having a technician check all three.
Corrosion on the terminals. White, blue, or green buildup around the battery posts can interfere with the electrical connection and is often a sign of an aging or leaking battery.
Age. Most car batteries last about three to five years, and the older a battery gets, the more likely it is to fail without much warning. If you don't know when yours was last replaced, testing it is the easiest way to find out where it stands.
